Got lucky and solved the problem. Checked the pressure regulator and on top of the ball on top of the spring was a piece of debris. Cleaned it up and voila, problem over.
I had uncorked a container of Aeroshell to add a bit and unwittingly dropped a small piece of plastic from the ring that remains on container after removing cap. Good wake-up call.

If the small plastic piece dropped from the oil bottle into the oil tank during top-up, why didn't it get caught in the oil filter before it got to the oil pressure regulator and spring?

Might of got through the filter bypass when the oil was cold?
Does anyone know if the oil gets full filtration when hot?

yes, the oil does go through the filter before reaching the pressure relief valve.

by-passed oil is routed to the oil pump inlet cavity.
