Flight Fans--
I have something new to throw into the mix on this topic: I have discovered, that, with my Sting Sport, at least, she burps quicker--and more consistently (usually 8-16 prop turns; sometimes just 4-6)--with that NEWLY designed Rotax oil filter (comes in the all-white box)installed on the engine.
I didn't even know I was installing a "new" filter from CPS. But I had a pretty good idea something was "up," because I could not pre-fill it with oil like I had been doing for the other ten oil changes. And I could look in there and clearly see a spring I hadn't seen on the "old" filters.
Let me tell you, this thing somehow reduces backflow and makes her burp a lot easier!

Yes, I read the oil blog a day or two ago--and now understand the changes and what they do for various installations. But, I did a couple of oil changes w/o this info, but could sure tell something major had changed!

Just spotted this topic. I have been away for two months. As far as my aircraft is concerned, the 'gurgle' is akin to the 'Green Flash' Some see it and some don't. I have gotten used to my engine after several years, wind 5-6 turns and fill low on the dip stick markings. If I fill to the max indication on the dip stick (new) the engine just spits out what it doesn't want and I spend considerable time cleaning the underside of the aircraft. A LAME friend here that specializes in Rotax when not handling GA, has also experienced the same with his aircraft. Doesn't seem to be a problem. Paul H.

Ian,
If you look on the rotax owners website, go to page 76 of the installation manual.( part 13.6- Feasible position and location of the oil tank) It will show you exactly where the tank should be located in relation to the engine and explains why. I was fortunate that I had plenty of room to put the tank anywhere I pleased. In an enclosed cowling where space is limited, you sometimes just have to do the best you can to stay within the parameters. rotax recommends. Being higher or lower than rotax recommends does not mean the oil system will not work; it's just not an ideal setup.
