I noticed the manual states you can run the engine for 1 minute then check the oil level,
I have had mixed results turning the prop by hand..my oil has 28 hours. very strange proceedure in 2011!!Prop slowly. Let the gases blow by the pistons and push the oil out and up.
I have also discovered that my Sting Sport gurgles quicker with fresh, clean oil than with old, dirty oil. I have thus shifted to 30-35 hour oil changes. Also, if I prop it while warm after use, it gurgles quicker the next morning while cold. Cold air temps; dirty, thick oil; lack of gurgle, whilst warm after the previous run; can make for 45-150 prop turns on my airplae. Sometimes, I got NO gurgle at all, no matter how many props.
Now, with clean oil, warmer summer air temps, and pre-gurgling (at last use), I consistently hear that lovely sound, mostly after just 4-14 turns of a prop blade!

I assume 1 minute is so it doesn't get hot and expand in volume too much, giving an overly optimistic reading.
Expansion while hot is why I don't check it hot, just after flying. I only gurgle it then, to get ready for manana--and gurgling and checking the level cold--i.e., at ambient temperature next day.
I just know that when my oil--AV9--is fresh and so clean it is difficult to see on the stick, she gurgles in a hurry--and that is with pumping it into the Sting's oil tank, which sits up way higher above the engine than most.

I am finding that I can turn the prop over and over up to 100 times and still not get a gurgle when the motor is cold. Now, I run the engine until I get 120deg oil temp. Shut down. Turn the prop normal to quick and now can get a gurgle on about number 15-20. Strange. :ohmy:

From all these variations you would think the suppliers or rotax :huh: would have a comment?

I've never had any trouble burping the engine hot or cold. Usually two or three revs done slowly. I think one thing that makes different installations act differently could be the location of the oil tank. Rotax says that the oil tank should be located so that the normal oil level in the tank falls between the centerline of the prop hub and 15 inches below the prop hub. Mine is located so that the oil level in the tank is about 7 inches below the prop hub. Also, my oil return line has no bends which place the oil line much higher than the top of the oil tank. This setup lets excessive amounts of oil left in the crankcase drain naturally to the tank after stopping the engine. (my personal theory). If the tank is too high, crankcase pressure has to force the oil uphill to the tank. If the tank is too low, the oil pump has to work harder to suck the oil up to the engine.
