Greg,Hand burping the engine is basically to move the oil that has drained from the oil tank into the crankcase back into the oil tank. A crankcase full of oil on a dry sump engine is not good and harmful to the engine. Another plus is by rotating the prop slowly and stopping on the compression stroke of each piston you are forcing the oil back into the oil tank reassuring that the engine components are well lubricated prior to engine start. Spinning the engine over with the starter with a crancash full of oil can damage your engine.

I didnt realize that the oil could drain back through the trochoid pump with the engine off?

Thats the reason we have to burp the engine before running it.

The reason you don't have to burp continentals or lycomings and other such engines is that the oil tanks are located under the crankcase and the oil naturally drains back to the tank. with them, you just have to eyeball the oil pressure when starting the engine. I would think that the lower the oil tank is (within the rotax specs) The less likely that an oil buildup is going to occur in the crankcase. Oil will seep past the oil pump and the bearings as well if the oil tank is too high. Being out of rotax specs as to height of tank is not necessarily a problem as long as you religiously burp the engine before each start.

MY engine is in sabre and I never had the oil drain back, but I understand it can happen with
some setups.
