Hello everyone, I have a plane with a 912 engine. I saw that some people fill the oil filter with some oil before replacing it, while others just install it directly. I would like to ask which one is better for the engine. Thank you very much for your answers.

I don't think there would be any difference in the two options, as long as you hand crank the engine to ensure the oil filter has been filled with oil before starting.

Further I have heard that the latest Rotax oil filters can not be prefilled😈

Pre-fill is an iffy business for me.  Before first start, I do build pre start oil pressure by turning a half dozen blades with the starter without the ignition on.  & then waiting a bit before for the oil to coat parts before an actual start.

Tried pre-filling after a positive hint in this forum. Putting on the pre-filled filter was easy-easy, with no spilling at all. I didn‘t even rush the filter in place, just did it as usual.

I am happy to know that the filter already contains a significant amount of oil when pulled tight. I‘ll stick to this procedure.

I teach to pre-fill in my  classes. You can fill it to the top three times. The oil just gets soaked up by the filter median and also fills the container outside of the filter median. This way you will help purge the air out. No oil will spill out. Always better to start an engine with a filled oil filter than a dry one. That said if you don't pre-fill the filter then you need to vent the air out of the filter after it's installed. Easier and quicker to pre-fill. I pre-fill cars and motorcycle's too.
