My gearbox on a 912iS Sling was swapped out under warranty at about 250 hours. There was a slight vibration noticeable around 5,300 rpm but most noticeable on start-up. Starting was becoming difficult having to use more open throttle than when new. The replacement gearbox restored everything back to normal. Was told that Rotax are still working on a fix and we will get the permanent fix under warranty.
Weather finally cooperated and made it to Lockwood. Had the plane finished by noon. They reshimmed and replaced 3 spring discs in the gearbox. The engine was noticeably quieter in idle. None of the “clackity clack” the gearbox seems to produce at idle. I always idle the engine at near 2000 rpm to avoid that regime. The engine seemed smoother in flight and for now the vibration is gone.
It's been about 3 months since you had your gearbox worked on. How many hours on the box? Any issues?
I had my prop balanced this morning. Wow, what a difference. Turns out that I was way out of balance at 0.7 IPS. When all was said and done, we ended up adding approx. 20 grams of weight at the 340 mark on the spinner plate and reduced the reading to 0.07. It was noticeably smoother. Unfortunately I was not able to conduct my usual vibration test due to clouds and weather on the way back. I'll try it again this weekend.
