James, a few questions so we can start narrowing down your problem?

1) What is your engine total time since new or valid overhaul?
2) Has any recent 150hr. check been done, specifically the top end for piston & cylinder condition?
3) What type of gear box do you have on your engine?
4) Has any gear box work been performed lately?
5) What type and length of prop are you using?
6) How many blades does it have?
7) Can you provide a brief overview of engine history including all maintenance done(what type work has been performed on it to date)?
8) Lastly, what type of aircraft is involved and what is your typical mission profile(float flying, training, buzzing around the patch etc.)?

It sounds like you bought the engine used so maybe you don't know the specific details of it actual history? If so our approach will have to be a little different. The more info and detail you can provide the better chance we have of not only narrowing down your problem, but also maybe we can provide some operating maintenance tips to avoid the problem from repeating itself in the future! :)

All good questions and some I can answer
This engine was purchased from another gyro pilot claiming that it ran well. I don't know the history of this engine. It has a B drive with 3 60inch IVO prop blades. Again the previous owner claimed it had no problems. We have installed new Bing 54 carbs and the engine fired up and ran well. We shut it down after the engine was warm. After just one minute we tried to start it and it didn't start. I was trying to duplicate the starting procedure that I would follow if I were going to fly. This is the same problem we had with the old Bing carbs. It would start, warm up, then not start. The SN on the engine is 3971840

We're sure not starting off with a lot of information, that makes it tough! Without knowing the service history and pedigree of the engine, we really don't know were we stand and can only assume the worst to error on the side of safety! If you don't have any Rotax specific training for two stroke engines, I strongly suggest you source a good qualified Rotax technician to help you out! You can find such people under the "Support" section of this web site. You should also arm yourself with the proper engine manuals, those also can be down loaded from the Rotax-Owner web site under the "Information" section.

At the very least, to get some idea of engine condition, you could remove the exhaust "Y" pipe and look into the exhaust ports of each cylinder. Examine closely the condition of the pistons and cylinder walls looking for scuffing, excess carbon build up, stuck piston rings, blow by etc.. If you find any problems, GET THEM CORRECTED by a qualified technician!

You should also have your gear box checked by a qualified tech with proper press and tools to measure and adjust your bevel washer spring pack pressure. Soft spring pressure in the gear box can lead to real hard starting, and in some cases when it does start it will refuse to rev up and rattle/chatter like crazy!

More often then not, a problem as your having is caused by more then one thing compounding to make your life miserable! You've bought a used engine with no service history, without having it torn down by a qualified tech, your really stabbing in the dark! I think the best advise I can give you is to source yourself out a real good qualified Rotax two stroke tech and have him help you out, short of writing a book of step by step procedures which is not only time consuming but also repetitive to what's already written in the manuals anyways, I don't know how I could better help you!

Thanks for the advise. As I write, my gyro is heading for an authorized Rotax repair shop.
