912 or 912s?

I Am buying a Trike in a few days, it can fly either with 912 or with 912s.
Which one do you advice to install?
At almost same price I prefer more power, but friends tell 912 is more reliable and 912s is living more problems.

    Hi Juan,

    They are both great engines and you'll be happy either way you go. One is not better than the other. The two main differences is the 912UL can use 87 octane auto fuel where the 912ULS needs 91 octane. The 912ULS is 100 HP and the 912UL is 80 HP. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but you seem to see a lot more 912ULS engines out there, but I don't have any numbers to back that up.

    Why is it that everybody recomends me 912 instead of 912s?
    Do they both have same TBO?
    Wich one has more fight hours?
    More power with same engine could result in more maintenance or problems?

    Hi Juan,

    Well it's like Chevy's and Ford's, you tend to like one over the other, but they both get you there.

    Either engine is a great engine and anybody that has had a 912 for any amount of time will tell you that. The only issues that most engines have had is usually the owner not following prescribed maint., best practices or use of unproven after market parts. That said yes there have a been a few engines that has had a problem, but it is rare indeed. Any machine can have an issue, but Rotax has proven its reliability for more than 20+ years with the 912 series engine. Many pick the 912ULS because of the additional HP which can really help for shorter take offs, heavier aircraft, high altitude and or higher density altitude operations. I prefer the 912ULS and why anyone would pick the 912UL would just be a personal choice for their application. Maybe other people can't get any other fuel other than 87 octane auto fuel? Who knows.
