Some aircraft have individual air filters, some a angle large filter connected to both. Whatever you do you don't want to have any restricted airflow. The Rotax air box is designed for that engine and setup to have the carb vent tubes incorporated along with carb heat.

The airbox has many advantages:
Carb heat
Ideal connection point for vent hose
Stabilizes carbs, prevents frothing of fuel at start up.
Drip trays
Equalizes airflow (it is not just a piece of irrigation pipe, it has been engineered to improve the airflow and fuel distribution to the cylinders)

Thanks Roger and Rob. Does the airbox make it easy to provide for carb heat? Is it just a matter of running a cable? Does it have a single air inlet? I've read that using it adds 5 horsepower (compared to using warm engine compartment air). Is that accurate?

You need a cable and a heatmuff on your exhaust so its not always simple.
It can improve horsepower but that would depend in the installation, like you say, how hot is the under cowl air?
