Hi Rodney,
Because you have an RV12 and they weren't in production when Rotax started putting clutches in all ULS engines in the US starting in 2003 it's a pretty safe bet you have one. The RV12 came out Nov. 2006

I am in Wasilla, 104 octane unleaded auto fuel (racing fuel) is available at the Sunoco gas station at 6th and Muldon...either by the gallon or in 50 gallon drums

FWIW, detonation occurs when the combustion flame front travels so fast across the combustion chamber that it creates a shock wave that you hear as a knock. It can be very damaging to the engine like hitting the piston with a hammer. Higher octane fuel actually SLOWS down the flame front, giving more controlled smoother combustion. In engineering school when I studied this stuff we were told that detonation can occur in various degrees of severity, some detonation you may not hear over the engine noise but it still may be happening to a lesser degree. The factory tests for this with sensitive instruments before they recommend a minimum octane level.
Pre-ignition is a separate phenomena but can occur simultaneously with detonation. It happens when the ignition of the flame occurs slightly ahead of time (before spark firing) and really messes up the engine timing and can also be damaging.
Bottom line: stick with recommended fuel specifications.

Thanks for that. Was unaware of the racing fuel option. I wonder if it would be fresh?

As far as I know it is...they often times are out and you need to wait for a new delivery or sometimes they have 112 Octane instead which would seem to indicate that it is most likely fresh.
