Heads Up!

I had a head bolt come out in flight on a 912 ULS and destroyed my engine. Check the torque on these bolts and save yourself $20,000.

    Top-Left Cyl # 2. It was sticking out over 1 inch. I had been having problems with the idle for a while so I don't think it came out all at once. Inflight smelled hot, cyl head temp pegged, power reduced to 45%. Engine destroyed but got back to the airport safely.

    This particular bolt/nut coming loose is an indication that this engine was overheated. The overheat caused the head to loose it's hardness and the torque of this nut to lower. Did you have any history of high CHTs?

    Temperature tape on many components was all within tolerance. No history of overheating.

    However, flying in the Las Vegas area it is not unusual to encounter 110 to 115 degrees during the summer. Would that cause the bolt to lose torque?
