Regulator problem ?

Started my RV-12 for the first time and everything was good for a while. Then I got a high voltage warning. I reduces power and the warning went away for a little while but soon came back on at the lower RPM. I shut down and checked the regulator connections and restarted the engine. I was only able to read batt volts after I started the engine. Lockwood recomended a new regulator. I installed it and I still only read batt voltage. Any thoughts?

    Hi Mike,

    This doesn't sound like a Reg/Rec problem as much as it does a wiring problem especially since you have tried two reg/rec. Double check how this is wired and the grounds.

    That is sounding correct. I checked the power from the generator and am getting 17volts at 2000 rpm. Now I just have to figure out where to start checking.

    The 22,000mF capisactor is for preventing spikes on shut-down and start-up. ANYTIME THE ENGINE IS RUNNING THE CONTROL TERMINAL HAS TO HAVE 12 VOLTS TO IT. if you turn on the master, or turn off the master and the tach or any guage pegs out the capacitor is bad. If you are sshutting downthe aircraft leave the master on till the engine stops. It might not kill the regulator the first time,but over time it will take its toll on the regulator.

    The 22,000 mf cap is not just for preventing spikes. its primary function it to allow the regulator to dump voltage if the battery is disconnected.
    The engine can run continuously with the master turned off and as long as the capacitor is installed the regulator is OK.
    The redundancy of the 914 electric fuel pumps is based on this concept. See 914 Installation Manual page 110: the main electric fuel pump is powered by the generator and the engine will run continuously with no airframe power because of the capacitor.
