If you have the option you may like to explore the aftermarket options.

The latest aftermarkets employ MOSFET technology - supposed to be superior to what is used in the Rotax /Ducati VR. You will have to ask an electronics person to explain why (not me).

Reputable (have received good reviews) range from about $250 $1000 Au delivered. 

There are at least two European suppliers and about the same number in the USA.

You will find a number of recent threads on this Forum on VR options & usage. 😈

If that's the original VR then it's 19 years old. Most things have a service life and 19 years is good. Even 10+ years. Amp draw and heat are VR killers. Just make sure your VR is in a well ventilated area to keep temps down. This regulator has been in use for decades and works on many applications, Many times it's an installation issue like the RV12's and not the regulators fault. Plus like us humans it can get old and tired. 😅
