I see, yes the wires can rub through the insulation and intermittently contact the shielding.
This was what happened back in 1990's with the stator recall.
But, this is very unusual since the recall with the new tefzel wire and separate insulating sleeve on each red wire.
ohm out each red wire from six-pin connector to ground. it should be no more than 4 ohms.

and wiggle it around while measuring the ohms. remove the stainless clamp and wiggle in that area as well.

I tested faulty red lead to ground, got 3.1 ohms

Rob, I was not able to wiggle things much at the time, but am not at the plane any more. Also, I tested resistance across both reds, got 7.6 - 8 ohms.

that is OK, the official range is 3.2 to 4.0 but 3.1 could just be an meter error; what reading do you get when you hold the probes together?
Anyways 3.1 is not enough of a problem to make it run poorly.
