No one will ever know unless they strip and examine the engine themselves. Other than that, it will be just a guess.

I would be curious to know when you split the case if it spun a main bearing and cut off oil supply to the connecting rod.

That engine serial number does have service bulletin for replacing the oil pump.
The drive pin could break causing a loss of oil pressure.
Was SB-912-032 complied with?
Spun main bearings are very rare in the 912 series, even with a total lack of lubrication and excessive contamination they tend remain in place.

Thanks for the info Rob, the log book doesn't show any indication of that SB being complied with. I'm out of town right now but once I get home I will do some further disassembly and check out the oil pump drive pin.
