External Alternator on 912 S

I have a 912 S with external alternator. Neither the generator nor the alternator light works and I don't have a switch for switching from the internal to the external units. The aircraft dealer said I don't need the lights because the MFD engine display tells me the condition of the battery.
I know that without the lights I have know way of knowing I lost the charging functions. The MFD only tells me how much current I draw and the battery voltage.
My question is about the switch between external alternator and the internal generator. Mine is the first light sport plane I have flown that has an external alternator but does not have the switch. Most of what I have heard indicates that both cannot be run at the same time. However I was looking at Rotax SB-912-016 dated 8/1996 shows both the internal generator and the external alternator connected to electrical without a switch. Do I need it?
