Rotax 912 spark plug caps

My engine often runs rough when first started after sitting for a day or two. Shutting down, fondling the spark plug caps and restarting cures the roughness. Seems like one or more of the spark plug caps are causing the problem. I noticed that LEAF sells spark plug caps for $41 each. How do I remove the existing cap and install the new one? What is the typical life (engine hours) of spark plugs and caps?

    Hi Tony,

    The caps may last the life of the engine, but sometimes they can go bad. They can be tested with an ohm meter. The value is 5k ohms. If wiggling the caps make a difference then My guess is you may have a bad connection. They just unscrew off the end of the wire. Before you get too involved in a lot of work. You may just want to take each cap off and trim the wire back 1/4" and replace the caps on each plug. Give this a try first and your problem may be solved. If not then time to do a little more trouble shooting.

    Hi Tony

    You say that your engine runs rough when it is cold and first started, but if you stop the engine, wiggle the plug caps, and restart then it runs better.

    I would suggest you do the same as usual, but don't wiggle the plug caps, or anything else and see if it runs better.

    I think you are getting carb icing before the engine has warmed up.

    Obviously it might be your plug caps, but I would be interested to see what happens.

    Tony,

    The spark plug caps simply unscrew from the wire. Just hold the wire very close to the cap and twist the cap off. Could be just a loose cap causing the problem. If the wire appears to be burned or corroded at the end, just cut the wire straight across ( 1/4" should be enough) apply a little dielectric grease on the wire end and screw the cap back on.
