gearbox type E from 503 TO 447

:blink: I would like to take E box off my 503 and use it on my 447. I was told here that it will work. Are there specialty tools involved, are there any part of the process that a good car mech. couldnt likely perform. Thanks. Rick

    Rick,

    No special tools necessary. Just a torque wrench, some metric sockets, and a large hose clamp to go around the rubber doughnut. Even for a novice, its half day job or less.

    Hello, Iam hoping Bill will see this. Thanks again for answering my gearbox questions as I have another one. Never been inside one so I wasnt sure what Bill was talking about the rubber donut but assumed it would be obvious when I got there. Havent seen it. HOWEVER SOMTHING IS STOPPING ME FROM REMOVING GEARBOX having removed the bolts,Can move box left to right and can get a 1/4 in. space between box and engine but somthing is holding it .(donut maybe) Did not want to get too rough. Will appreciate your time

    Rick,

    Sorry about that. I should have gone a little more into detail. What has you stopped is an allen head socket screw which is down in the center of the drive gear about two or three inches. Just drop in your locking pin to keep the crank from turning and take that bolt out. Then the whole prop side of the gearbox will come right off.

    Better yet, Go to the California Power Systems website. I think the address is www.800-airwolf.com

    At the top of their site, look under the TECH INFO tab and click on TECH ARTICLES. Go to tech article #55, C and E gearbox maintenance-basic teardown and inspection. It gives a step by step procedure with pictures.

    Don't be discouraged, it's really not a complicated job.

    Rick,

    Couple of other things. You can use a regular three jaw automotive type gear puller to pull the flywheel off. Just be sure to put a couple of washers or some sort of spacer in the center so you don't damage the threads in the crank end. If you don't have a locking pin, do NOT use a mild steel bolt. If it bends, you won't be able to get it out. I have used allen wrenches. The largest one you can drop into the locking pin hole the better. Don't use an allen wrench with that little round ball thingy on the end, they can break off. Just a standard L allen.

    Thanks for the airwolf site info. Have been on that site before looking for this info,however my searching skills are very limited. Not very computer savy. Got the center bolt out and case slid right off. Will have to find my large puller tomorrow. Thanks again. Rick
