Mike this guy is in your part of the world and had a similar prob to you...he sorted it with bigger rads.

Mike,
The pickups are the small cubes ( about 1" square) mounted next to the flywheel, one on each side. I'm sure your mechanic reset the timing.
Since you have pretty much covered everything else, I would reduce the pitch enough to get your max. RPM up where it belongs and see what happens.

Nick, The Avid was built close to me and I don't have any way of knowing what temps the other two owners experienced, and no record of heat/rpm problems show in log books. I guess I will have to remove the thermostat to check if 14 galls per min to flow through them. Man, thats a lot of water... I bet mine wont comply. I am still leaning toward a fuel supply problem because before the low rpms there were never a heat problem...so I see the two related. What Bill (i thinks) said that without full rpm at WOT it will overheat, makes good sense.
The rotax guy has told me to remove the filters and replace with joiners and see if I can achieve max rpm. I will do that as soon as I get the new gaskets and put the manifold back together. If that proves unsuccessful then at least I can then rule out the filters which is my priority suspect. Thanks for the links Nick... a lot of reading there when I get a min or so. It all helps to educate me.
Bill, it seems to me I do not have those pick ups for the timing... does this mean my 582 is the "old" one that cannot have the timing altered?

Mike,
The old points type ignition and the new ducati ignition both require the timing to be set. The ducati ignition is easier to set but both types require setting and it has to be exact. The beauty of the electronic ignition is that once it is set, there are no points or cams to wear out. You wouldn't see the pickups as they are inside the mag end cover next to the flywheel. I'm sure your mechanic would have set the timing.
I would try the prop pitch and see what happens.

Just looking at your engine pictures again and I can see from the electronic ignition boxes on top of the engine that you do have the newer Ducati system.
