No easy way I know of without the tools...I use a 360deg protractor mounted on the crank at the mag end..but it could be mounted either end I suppose and set it to the timing fig thats in the engine handbook I use 16 deg BTDC...see attached picture,
Figs from the manual...1.47mm or .059"...016deg BTDC.

Most people use a dial gauge mounted in one of the spark plug holes but unfortunately depending on who gives you the information on corrected figs for the dial gauge as its goes on an angle into the cylinder....I find it a bit hit and mis,

Geoff,
You can set the timing with a protractor or a dial indicator. Both are accurate. If you have access to a dial indicator it is easier to use.
go to the California Power Systems website and click the tech info tab. Go to article #39, "timing the ducati ignition". It gives detailed instructions with illustrations on exactly how to do the timing and their numbers include the offset compensation for the slanted spark plugs. If you use the protractor method, you don't need the compensation. If you want to be sure of the numbers, you can set the angle with the dial indicator and double check it with the protractor. The numbers at CPS have worked for me. This info used to be available from Rotax, and probably still is somewhere, but I can't find it.

Thanks Nick and Bill Used dial indicator and protractor reset the timming runs even better now l have done the recomended run in procedure l have then pull the motor off pulled the barrels off there are a few scuff marks on the barrels l have sanded them out leaving a cross hatch reinstalled the barrels l will refit the engine tommorow and give it a run see how she goes.
