I must say, it does appear to work fine for what it is. Roger may know more about the various services offered by SPOT, but from what I've seen, its a cool system, if you have people who want to "track your movements". Some plans allow you to push a status button (and perhaps even type a short message to someone), but I think its safe to say that it's designed to be used between you and "your friends", who have the special URL to track you. That in itself, is nice.
But, what if you crash, and are unconscious, or somehow unable to use the device to let people know of your distress? An ELT (assuming of course it activated itself after a crash) does notify authorities (AFRCC) of your situation.
When I purchased my plane, I could have gone with the more expensive 406 ELT, but decided to take the cheap way out, and went with the 121.5. Yes, I recognize that location services will be less than if I had a 406 unit, although even with a 406 unit... There's going to be a helluva delay before people get to you. You'll probably have bled to death by the time rescue is on scene. They just know where to go sooner, than if you had a 121.5 system.
So Ted, what kind of plane do you need this ELT for?
Just like computers operator error is to blame many times. I won't say that one couldn't malfunction as it is still an electronic device. I do know they back their product 100%. I know tons of people that use theirs and have absolutely no issues.
You can call me and I can give you any details or discuss this.
You might say I have an inside track on these and I'm just availing myself to you for more specific info. 520-574-1080 Tucson, AZ

My plane is a W/S Northwing Apache with a 912S rotax ( http://www.trikeschool.com/desc.ydev?prod_id=26163 ). This is my plane prier to me getting it but what you see is what I have.
The Spot would work very well with your Trike. It could be placed on a bar with some velcro or the best place is to just put it on the dash facing up.
Did you have a chance to see my friends last flight on his Spot link?
