You said: "....with the venting device pointed backwards." You really need to see if this is the proper orientation for your aircraft's fuel cap vent. Most of the fuel cap vents I have seen over the past 50 years are oriented with their vent tubes facing forward so as to slightly pressurize the fuel tank. Double-check your operations manual.
