cabin heater

Question. I have a Sirius TL3000 running the Rotax 912 ULS. The cabin heater well lets just say the "new" exhaust exchange system is less than hoped for. Has anyone had any experience using a 12V auto cabin heater off a cigarette lighter jack. These usually run 150 -250 watts. Would the Rotax electrical system be adequate? Any interference to radio or avionics?

250 watts at 12 volts is almost 21 amps. That alone would put your dynamo driven electrical system at the very edge of its capacity. And the Ducati regulator is not know for being "super reliable" even at lower loads. So unless you have an external alternator, you can immediately forget about this idea. But even if you do have an external alternator, 250 watts is only about 850 btu. Compare that to this heater offered by Edge Performance in Norway that is 3.5kw (which equals 12,000) btu. That should tell you that 850 btu is not even close to what you need for effective cabin heat.

Another option is to get a heated vest and wear it under a warm jacket. A vest should draw less than 5 amps and if you wear it with a jacket it will keep your body core temperature up, which in turn will keep the blood flowing to your extremities and thus your hands and feet will stay warm, too.
