It looks hard to get at the leads but I'd rather not have to pull all the coils out. How hard is it to just attach the new leads to the coils while in place?

I thought they might need changing just from being old. The aircraft is 12 years old but only 450hrs.
I have been getting a rough mag check out lower rpm. It is fine at 4000 but at 3000rpm it is rough.
Same in flight.
At 5200rpm it runs fine on one ignition, but at 5000 it runs rough. In fact if I run at 5000 in the cruise for a while then go to 5200 and check one circuit (B I think) it will run rough. After a while at 5200 it clears. Almost like it is burning crap off the plugs, but surely there would be no oil build up at 5000rpm. The cylinders compression checked fine, and it doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. I changed the spark plugs and caps and my next was to change the leads to try an fix the problem. I am using the correct plugs. The gap is good. If it was a car I would use hotter plugs.
I changed mine at 390 TT including the plug caps. Was glad I did the rubber was hardened and chaffed. It was easy to do and eliminated a potential problem. I also found a good deal on the plug caps at Spark Plugs.com. As a side note I recently switched to the new 100LL SWIFT replacement and the engine runs noticeably better, especially in a decent with the power pulled back it used to vibrate in the 3000 to 4500 range that is pretty much gone now.
