Oil filter

I have been using Tempest oil filters for my 912 ULS for some time now and have been told not to do so. I asked them why but can't get a straight answer as to why not. Tempest seems to be doing ok on my engine.

    the Tempest is a little more expensive and I hear it does not have the same anti-drainback valve? I have not cut one open to see for myself, anyone else done a comparison?
    How do you know if it is doing OK on your engine?

    The Tempest and especially the Champion oil filters shouldn't be used.
    Several years ago Rotax made some changes in their filter over standard filters. 10+ years ago that wasn't the case, but it is now.
    The Rotax filter had the anti drain back membrane changed to better affect the leakage out of the filter. I believe it is a little softer and more pliable and not as stiff as other filters. Then Rotax added the check valve that you won't find in other filters and last Rotax changed the by-pass pressure.
    In the US the majority of the filters activate at 13-15 psi by-pass pressure. The older Rotax filter was 14-16 psi. Not much of a difference to worry about at that time, but Rotax made a big change here due to worries about by-passing oil on starts. So the new
    by-pass pressure is 18-22 psi. This is a big difference over stock filters. There is nothing special about the filter medium inside.

    Tempest oil filters are only $.60 difference in price from the Rotax at Aircraft Spruce. Why roll the dice?
    Other things that will add to accumulated issues is following and not following the maint. schedule, i.e. extending oil changes and poor oil choices, ect....


    p.s.
    Will the engine run on a different filter? Of course it will. Will it make it to TBO or not have other issues along the way? That's the $64K question. Save $.60-$1.20 a year and see if it cost you $10K later?

    There are only a couple of oil filter Mfg's. They have just been branded with different names for different selling companies. I learned this years ago when I did a research project on oil filters and talked to a few of the oil Mfg. engineers. Never talk to the first guy on the phone. They tend to read from a paper. Go down a few layers of people to the engineer's and they'll tell you everything that isn't publicly written.
