Hello all. I am located in Canada where we have 0ctane ratings of 87, 89 and 91. We also have a couple of companies who supply 93 and 94 Octane gas. I don't know if this is similar in the U.S.? My question is what is the best octane rating to use in our engines. I don't understand the "RON 95" rating so I would like it if some of you could chime in on what Octane you recommend that is best for our engines. I have been using the 94 octane with no ethanol added but wonder if that may be overkill? Thx. in advance.

Canada and the US use the same fuel octane rating system. AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
If you have a 912UL you can use 87 octane or higher and if you have a 912ULS use 91 octane or higher.
To be more specific to your question you can use 91 oct. and don't have to pay higher prices for higher grades of fuel.

In Australia we use the RON octane rating. The minimum octane for 912uls is 95.
We generally have 3 choices of fuel, 91, 95 or 98.
Pulled this from Wiki... Anti-Knock Index (AKI) or (R+M)/2
In most countries, including Australia, New Zealand and all of those in Europe, the "headline" octane rating shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States, Brazil, and some other countries, the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), and often written on pumps as (R+M)/2). It may also sometimes be called the Posted Octane Number (PON). Difference between RON, MON, and AKI
Because of the 8 to 12 octane number difference between RON and MON noted above, the AKI shown in Canada and the United States is 4 to 6 octane numbers lower than elsewhere in the world for the same fuel. This difference between RON and MON is known as the fuel's Sensitivity, and is not typically published for those countries that use the Anti-Knock Index labelling system.
Thx. to you both for the fast replies and answering my questions. I now have a better understanding and exactly what octane rating is best for my engine. Appreciate the help.

I have a 912ULS 100HP SN 564040 with 300 hours and no problems.. I've been using Mogas (ethanal free) at airport but they have terminated carrying it. Only 100LL Avgas is avail on field now.
Years back I believed it was recommended to use 100LL with 1 oz of TCP with an oil change every 30 hours.
Is this still Rotax's best recommendation for my engine?
If your fuel tanks are okay with the ethanol it won't hurt to run the 91 oct. with ethanol. It's better than using 100LL. You can use 100LL with TCP, but Decalin does the same thing and is less corrosive. Everyone I know uses Decalin.
