I know of 9 rotax owners that have had to change the ignition modules. I changed mines two years ago. You can test capacitor by using the one blue wire the (two blue wires are both linked together inside) and use a black wire ,the capacitor test in a new module unit tests around 2 micro farad . I hard staring one seem to deteriorate down to 1.5 micro farad or below a cross those two back and blue wires . You have to use a capacitor tested to do this . One think is for sure it will fail with time and use in the end sorry to say .

Does anyone out there have ignition modules that are 2010 or later that have died?. These units should have the soft start built into them. I would like to get hold of one if possible I will pay the postage and even a small remuneration to be able to get hold of one or two but they need to be the soft start ones. Maybe out of a crashed aircraft as they would not be used again or possibly even a engine fire. It does not matter if the module is damaged so long as it is intact

With over 1000 hours on a 912UL that was manufactured about 1999 we had symptoms similar what others described including difficulty starting. We replaced them with third party modules from Allistair Wilson - SPORTFLIGHT INTERNATIONAL LLC , who runs ad on Barnstormers. They appear to work perfectly (at least the immediately cured the hard starting issue. But we have an other ignition related issue: One mag quits (fails the mag test) when, and only when, the engine is hot. We believe that we've got a coil that that's defective and heat sensitive.
Anyone reading this ever have 912 coil or coils fail? Am I correct that those coils (There are four in total) are sold in pairs?
