Hi Walter,

You usually do put filters on the supply side in almost all engines. All the planes that come into my shop are on the supply side except 1-2 that someone decide otherwise.

Our fuel filters are placed before the pump. The fuel pump itself has a fine filter in it. If the fuel is not filtered before it reaches the pump, the pump itself could become clogged.

I've always put mine on the supply side of the electric and mechanical pumps for the reason Mark mentioned. It has been my experience that while some trash can come from the plumbing, It more often comes from the fuel tank.

You never place a filter between mechanical pump and carbs. Filters are placed at outlet of tanks so clean fuel goes to engine thru pumps. Should a filter get clogged, you can switch tanks and get clean fuel to engine. If you put a filter just before carbs and it gets clogged, no clean fuel can get to engine from any tank.
