storing motor in crate

Hello, I am installing a 2001 brand new 912 uls in a kitfox series 6. I am just starting the engine install and just took motor out of the crate. I bought the motor and kit from a gentleman who had the entire kit since 2001. I began to read the install on the instructions and it mentioned about hand cranking the motor 2 complete revolutions every 3 months. I got the engine to turn but it does very hard should I be worried??????? Kinda nervous with a $18,000 paper weight that is brand new.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

If the engine was stored in a weatherproof location and sealed in its original shipping crate, it would probably start. Unfortunately there are other considerations. All are worth doing however, and much cheaper than damaging the engine by starting as is.

All rubber components will need to be replaced. O rings, carb diapraghrams, hoses etc. This is recommended every five years regardless of engine hours.

You should pull the jugs and examine them carefully. any corrosion damage will most likely be where the rings sat in contact with the cylinder walls for years and also on the sides of the pistons where you won't be able to see with a borescope.

Bearings, in my opinion, would probably be OK but someone with a little more experience could probably comment on that. Cranking the engine by hand will tell you that the engine is not siezed but not much more. On a good note, a brand new engine out of the crate is very hard to turn by hand without a prop installed or some sort of leverage on the prop hub.

You need to go back through all the service bulletins, letters, and instructions, and see what needs to be upgraded or repaired. All those bulletins are on this website under the support tab.

Personally, I would consider having the engine dismantled and inspected by an authorized Rotax mechanic and doing any required upgrades at the same time. Although expensive, it would still be much cheaper than possibly seriously damaging the engine by starting it up as is.

This is a situation I have never had to deal with but there may be others on the forum that have. I'm sure you'll get other opinions that may help you decide which way to go.

A 2001 engine is probably a 1200 hour TBO which can be brought up to 1500 hours TBO only.I think you need a crankcase to make 2000 hour TBO.
