Yes, I'm talking about on the electrode, rather than the threads where they protrude into the cylinder.

http://www.theultralightplace.com/sparkplugs.htm is a good place to learn about sparkplugs and a whole heap of other stuff.
I have found the CPS site useful for understanding Bing carbies, and how to adjust them.
Go here http://www.800-airwolf.com/articles.htm but expect to spend a couple of hours!!!

The carbs are Bing 54's. Can I adjust the mixture with a set screw or something, or do I have to go inside the carb and change something?

I dont suppose its an inverted engine is it,
Why don't you fit a new set and see what happens,
Is the engine oil injected or premix...and are you using the correct oil,
My manual recommends a plug change at 25 hours...I run to 50hrs,
Be very careful weakening the mixture on a 2 stroke...it can lead to engine seizures if your not careful.
