Is it permissible/advisable to add a protective diode across the solenoid coil in order to
reduce the possibility of electrical surges on the main buss?

Thats a good question as that is the standard procedure. But a diode is not shown in the installation manual and the relay is connected through the ECU wire harness so I would say the answer is no.
