Hi Dennis,
Actually to the contrary. SeaFoam was recommended to me by Ronnie Smith of Rotax. I was going to use Sta-Bil and he said they had only experience with SeaFoam and therefore could only recommend what they had tested.
I have been using SeaFoam about one tank full (22 gal.) per year in my 912UL with no bad results and assume that it does some good keeping the fuel system clean and reducing carbon build up in the engine. Must admit that it is also my belief that the ethanol in the auto gas is a great fuel systen cleaner even if it has strong negative side effects to deal with. My local lawn mower repairmen said that he thought that Sta-Bil was a superior product as a fuel preservative so I use that in my lawn equipment on a regular basis. The Sta-Bil is also far less expensive than the SeaFoam for use as to stabilizer for the lawn equipment gasoline.
I want to mention that Ronnie Smith was the also the first fellow that recommended the use of SeaFoam in the 912 to me.
Seafoam and Sta-Bil are both good products and won't hurt your engine, but if you intend to be down for any extended time it is still better to drain the fuel and use fresh. As fuel sits and evaporates it starts to loose its additives and octane. Save the Seafoam and Sta-Bil for engines that don't cost $20K or where your life or someone else may depend on not having a detonation issue and a forced (crash) landing. Take the fuel out of the plane and put it in the car or some other low no life dependent engine.
