Rick, look closely at the connections at the bottom of the regulator. This is a well documented trouble spot. This connection has a tendency to lose good contact, eventually causing arcing and sometimes burning the connector. I think it far nore likely that this connection is not good and well stabilized than it is that heat from a radiator hose caused the problem. I think that by moving it, you temporarily improved the connection. You need to make that connection good, and stabilize it in position.
