I recently purchased an older Airborne XT trike with a 912. I'm studying the Airborne service schedule and found two entries under "Reduction gearbox" that are a mystery - "tow release adjustment withing tolerance" and "release cable." What could "tow release" have to do with the reduction gearbox? (I've learned that Airborne's manuals are a little odd and this entry could be in the wrong place in the schedule.)
Not necessarily! That hollow output shaft on the rotax 912 gearbox can be used for an in flight variable pitch prop and I know in Australia they could tow hang gliders with a cable assembly through the prop centre. Usually the hang glider pilot would release the tow from his end similar to a glider but in the event of an emergency a safety release from the towing aircraft makes a lot of sense.
