I am always wandering do you check oil hot or cold seems to make a difference when it is checked cold it's always low say mid stick hot it's over full which is it. Thanks
Can the oil level be a bit different from a hot check vs a cold check? Yes, but should be close and within range on either.Most of the time the main difference for many owners is the amount of oil sitting in the bottom of the crankcase. This will change your level that you see. So checking the oil right after you land may have a bit of a difference vs an aircraft that is cold and sat for days or longer. Cold OAT and engine vs a hot one. Many think that because the oil level on the stick is down a quarter of the way that the engine was using oil. It just lied to them. They rarely ever use oil.

Mine always reads more when hot compared to cold. I also find that when it is particularly hot it is difficult to read the level as the oil doesn't cling to the dip stick as nicely as it does when it is cold. I only check it before first flight of the day unless there is evidence of a leak after a flight.
So the consensus is check it cold and if it's in the level reading portion of the stick leave it alone if I fill mine to the top cold it will be half inch over full warm.
Preflight:
Check oil. MID level on stick seems standard.
BURPING
Rotate prop left slowly on compression stroke.
GURGLE
Recheck oil. MAX seems standard
