Float Bowl Corrosion?

Following an inspection of the float bowls on a 914 UL ( 75 hours since new ), what appeared to be a grey deposit was observed in the same position on both bowls. The mechanic believes it could be caused by water in the fuel. Is that a possibility and any other ideas?
