Inadvertent Starter Engagement

I haven't done this yet (Honest!), but what would happen if one inadvertently engaged the HD starter while the engine was running? I suspect that there would be no clashing of gears and that the sprag clutch would not engage. Would there be any damage to the sprag clutch? Thanks!
