Ok, thanks all. I realised I needed the spring for sure in case the cable broke, but did wonder if a lighter one could be used.
Anyway, it looks like the answer is in the cable and I will see what I can do with that.

There are springs with lighter tension out there.
McFarlane supplies them with their vernier throttle cable. I believe ACS also have lighter tension springs listed.
It's been awhile since I switched to the McFarlane throttle cable, but there was a big difference in tension between their spring versus the Rotax stock one.

McFarlane offers two lighter springs for the Rotax 912/914. Both are lighter tension than the OEM. I use the lightest one and find it much less prone to creep on during flight, but it still has plenty of tension to go full on in case of a cable break.
