fretting

in 912 / 914 Technical Questions 8 years ago
I am looking at a 2005 Evektor. I have been told to avoid that year because of problems with the crankcase fretting. Could someone enlighten me more on this issue? Thanks in advance.

    There is certainly some evidence that there were a number of problems with 2005 engines. Take a look here:

    Why not make an offer based on the risk of the engine being a problem? Where are you based?

    Fretting was on 2006 and older engines due to owners operating at high manifold pressures and rpm below 5200 at wide open throttle. This overloaded case and allowed movement between halves. Fretting between case halves shows as oil leakage at joint that gets worse with time.
