You may want to look at SB-912-026. If your serial number falls in that range you'll be looking at a new stator. The issue this SB deals with is the insulation on the stator wires deteriorating. From the pictures it looks like the wires are oxidized and have been exposed for a while. Maybe that's just from the recent damage, but take a look at the insulation of the entire run of wire, you'll have to peel back the shielding to do that.
The SB states cables of the stator assembly. It does not specify only the ignition wires.
I've seen the charging wire insulation deteriorated on these before and from the looks of the charging wires in the pictures the insulation has some issues.
Certainly can't hurt to check and ensure the actual fault is corrected.
