I own two vans rv12 , one has 190 hrs the other 120 hrs never had any problems , both are installed on the engine fire wall in the engine side with a fresh air supply to keep them cool .
I fly from North Carolina to Florida in 90 to 95 deg and never had issues so far .
Too much heat either internal or external is a reg. killer.
What I have done on the RV12's I see is take that small 1" vent tube that protrudes into the air intake up at the front of the cowl and pull it forward just enough to silicone it facing forward for cool ram air flow. The way Vans has it mounted so the end just protrudes into the air intake in a perpendicular orientation causes a negative pressure at the tip of the hose which would want to draw air inward down by the reg. As air passes this tube it cause a negative pressure at the smaller tubes end and tries to suck air back up through the tube. That is already heated air and negative pressure isn't usually as efficient as positive pressure not to mention cooler air from the outside. Facing that tube forward uses cool ram air over the reg and forces hotter air away. The mount on that shelf in the RV12 is right behind the #4 exhaust pipe and all the hot air blows back against this metal area. This setup can't dump its heat very well with hot air blowing on it and then sucking hot air into and around the reg.
I pull the tube up in the air intake forward with the slack in the tubing and silicone it facing forward. No one that I have done this with has ever had an issue and the temps on the metal are at least 20-30F cooler. The other thing that would help is to use some header wrap on the #4 exhaust pipe to cut way back on radiated and convected heat.
Vans other option is to place the reg in the cockpit which is better, but having cool air blown over it would be even better.
