High EGT maybe

I have another question for Roger but anyone else is welcome to voice an opinion. I'm glad to hear from you. I have a 912ul Kitfox 4. I have only a few hours flying off the test phase. My EGT's are showing right at redline at 5000rpms. The carbs have never been opened up so everything is as delivered. I have the Rotax quad gauge that I hear is not the most accurate. I also have the thermal wraps that I wonder if they may affect my readings. Engine runs great but that needle has me a little concerned. Thanks, James Thomas

    Hi James,

    What is your actual EGT temps?
    Are the EGT probes 100mm (4" (rounded off)) from the exhaust port? If they are closer then your EGT's may be hotter.
    If the header wrap is around or under a probe they will be as much as 125F off, but usually fluctuate.
    Most see EGT's of 1300F-1475F. I know that's a wide margin, but there are things that influence this so it isn't exactly the same for every plane. I usually see mine around 1400F-1450F.
    The other item that will affect EGT temps is your air filter intake. A restricted flow has increased EGT's and an easy air flow with cool dry air is lower. I have seen removing a crammed in paper air filter swapped with a K&N air filter drop EGT's by as much as 125F-140F.

    Hey Roger. I think you just solved my problem. The probe is less than 2 inches from the exhaust flange plus the thermal wrap is very snug around both sides of the probe. I didn't install the probe myself. I bought the partially built Kitfox with the engine and the probe was already installed. Thanks, James Thomas
