What do you mean by a "starter stall"? From your "zzzzzz" description, it sounds like you have a loose/broken wire or connection somewhere. Can you isolate the issue to the starter or the solenoid? Have you put an ohmmeter on the starter solenoid or the starter? From your description it sounds like something is loose/broken, but "close enough" to allow a high resistance connection that then expands enough to make contact. If I was you, I would check it out without powering up anything, and I would try to isolate the issue.

Thanks Sandy. By starter stall, I mean that the prop stops, I don't hear the starter running, as though something is slipping, and the sound is like a very poor electrical connection. I have removed, cleaned, and resecured every connection in the starter circuit; battery, master, and starter solenoids, and starter. If it is electrical, it must be internally in one of the components. The odd thing about this is that after that first start of the day, everything works flawlessly. I will continue to work on this and I will post the results when I find it. Just hoping for someone who has been there, and done that.........Tom

Have you replaced the solenoid to rule it out?

Hey Roger. No, I have not. In the automotive industry, it was not uncommon to add a starter switch with clip-on leads to the starter circuit. One end is clipped to the starter, and the other end goes to the battery positive. The mechanic could then crank the engine from under the hood. Often used to bump the engine crank around. I may try one of those which, in effect, isolates the starter. I can't think of any problems that this would create. Any thoughts??

I hope the sound you hear is not the sprag clutch slipping?
Is the battery/cable good enough to turn it over fast normally?
I know a couple of people who needed their sprag clutch replaced due to poor battery and cable design turning the engine over slow.....
