New style cylinder heads

I understand that with the new style cylinder heads the temperature probe sits directly in the coolant, and therefore the reading is referred to as "coolant temperature." I also understand that waterless coolant is no longer allowed and the 50/50 mix has a max temperature of 120C or 248F.

Questions: 1)Is there any advantage to monitoring coolant temperature on both sides of the engine? 2)Is there any advantage to monitoring coolant temperature for each cylinder? 3)What is the recommended probe?

    Hi Ken,

    Part of this question and answer depends on your aircraft instrumentation and its abilities.

    If you have the new heads with the coolant probes installed then yes you need to monitor a minimum of one head and if you can you should monitor both sides.
    I don't think doing all 4 is necessary and not even set up that way.

    Thanks Roger. The instrumentation is Dynon Skyview so two or even four is possible. Do the new heads use the same temperature probe as the old heads? I have a Dynon Rotax sensor kit with two probes but not sure if it is for new or old cylinder heads. This all relates to 914, not 912, but I don't think there is any difference in this regard.

    I think it is the same probe, but I'm not sure.
    Maybe Rob can chime in here to confirm one way or the other.

    yes, the 912, 912S & 914 use the same probe as the old cyl heads.
    The 912iS uses a different probe.
