Hi Tom

I use a piece of string about 4mm diameter. Hook one end of the spring on the exhaust and loop the string through the other
end of the spring.

You can have the length as long or short as you need depending where your springs are, some can be a bit of a pain to reach. I find this the easiest way for me. I used to use a purpose made wire hook on a T-handle, but the string is far better.

I was told you don't want to really use a screwdriver or such tool cause you can damage or weaken the spring contact point.

I've been using zip ties or like mark said you can use thick string. I saw someone using a very thin piece of nylon ratchet straps.

Use a step stool if you need more leverage.

here is our tool. it is just 3/16" mild steel with a sharp bend at the one end and a piece of tube welded to the other end. if you make it about 2 feet long you can reach down between the oil pump and cylinders to grab the spring. It is so easy to use, even one-handed
