Depending on who you ask this can be a debatable subject. Yes Rotax would like to see an overhaul and yes many do go well past TBO. Unless you are bound by your regulatory rules in your country then I'm a fan of going on condition. The problem can be the owner themselves. What I mean by that is some do very poor maintenance through the years and poor inspections. So long as you follow the maintenance rules and do good inspections then going on condition shouldn't be an issue. The maint. manual says do a compression test every 200 hrs. I do a leak down test every annual. just habit and only takes a few minutes. As the engine starts getting up there in hours or years do an oil analysis once a year at annual. It only cost $20. I use AvLabs out of Texas. They have a huge data base on Rotax engines and run each sample 3 times. They will send or email the results. If any thing is really bad they will call you. Just cheap insurance since my X-ray vision is going down hill at may age. :P

You need to do the proper maint. on the gearbox and engine along the way and don't try and cut as many corners as you can. Unfortunately I see that a little too often.

Age verses hours should play a part in your maint. decisions.

Now that I have said that you may get some here that have pro overhaul views. Who's absolutely right, I guess the person you ask? In the US you are allowed to go on condition.

Hi All,
On the same TBO subject, my 912 ULS (S/N: 4426___) is 15 years old but has only 290 hours.

What happens with the engines which are run very little should they really be overhauled on age condition?

Sure I can extend to 15 years doing the bulletins but according to age it should be overhauled. What is your opinions please.
