Running too cool

I have a UK based 2011 built Aeroprakt A22 Foxbat (Valor in US) with a 912S engine. The oil temperature never gets above 70 degrees C. I know this is not good for maximum protection. The oil cooler has a thermostat fitted so I suspect the engine cooling system is working a little too well. The cabin heater works by ducting from the back of the cooling radiator and it is not very successful at heating the cabin because the radiator doesn't get very warm. The engine has only done 60 hours from new but how do I go about getting the engine to run warmer? Thanks, James.

    I practise full covering of oil cooler and partial covering water cooler at winter time.
    The ideal think is to make cover regulated from cabin (like cowling flaps).

    Hi James,

    In my Eurostar I find that the best way to regulate the oil temperature is by blanking off variable amounts of the coolant radiator. I have a couple of different size plastic strips that slide in between the cowling and radiator. I select the appropriate piece depending on the ambient temperature.

    During winter I cover about 50% and leave it completely uncovered during summer.

    Hello James,

    You may use a sponge to cover the intake, that works very well.

    You just have to try different size up to a full cover up.

    Many just use a long strip of 2" aluminum tape across the radiator and or oil cooler. I just taped mine. My oil cooler is on the back side of the coolant radiator. I put a piece of 2" aluminum tape all the way across. I flew yesterday and oil temps were 205-215F and the CHT's were 195-200F.


    .05 cents worth of tape once a year is pretty inexpensive.
