Oil pressure relief: cone or ball?

I would like to open a debate on the use of the oil pressure relief ball (p/n 432680) or cone (p/n 857230)
I see other posts have recommended the cone, I think it is expensive and not all that beneficial. Is it really worth it?

    Hi Rob,


    My two cents:

    I have seen quite a few have an increase in low oil pressures by as much as 15 psi with the swap. Most of the time I see at least 5 and less oil pressure fluctuations. I have installed close to 60 of them and know of at least 40 others. In the beginning I was ordering 10 at a time and everyone that came into the shop wanted them. That certainly isn't the case anymore.
    I heard of one guy said it made his oil pressure too high. That one was a little tough to see how that happened.
    Is it absolutely necessary, no. Evidently the old ball bearing has been around a long time, but I do believe that since the digital instrumentation has evolved with many using it then these fluctuations in oil pressure is now more noticeable.
    Someone at some point must have thought this was a good idea, but that's are way way over my head. I have seen the rational in writing and videos, but does it truly make a difference for some??????

    Does it help everyone I doubt it and some may never notice a difference.

    Thanks Roger,
    so if you have nasty oil pressure fluctuations go with the cone, if not, save $40 and go with the ball? Or just go with the cone and be done with it?
    Whats the best advise? Anyone else want to wade in??

    Hi Rob,

    Part of this all started with the TBO extension SB as some of this was a requirement. The plug screw and spring.
    "so if you have nasty oil pressure fluctuations" or maybe change it with continuous low oil pressure where other options didn't work.
    Many of my guys wanted the TBO extension and others just thought it a good idea as an easy fairly inexpensive upgrade. Only takes 5 minutes to install. haven't heard any negatives except the one guy claiming too high an oil pressure and I might have attributed that to something else undiscovered.
