Overload clutch

Hi,

Can anyone advise on the correct overload clutch limits the maintenance manual states between 442 and 590 ft lbs however the rotax video suggest 230 - 530 inch lbs is the limit with a recommendation of 300 plus ?

    Hi Paul,

    Don't get the overload clutch (a.k.a. slipper clutch) and the gearbox friction torque check mixed up. Two different animals. The overload clutch (a.k.a. slipper clutch) on the engine side uses a tremendous amount of ft/lb torque. I personally don't do this unless it is a special needs check. This check can bend engine frames fairly easy without proper support.
    The friction torque check in the gearbox is easy and won't hurt the engine frame. It is the measure of the 3 bellville washers spring pressure in the gearbox.
    The video you are referring to here on the forum is for the gearbox friction torque check. Just do this check. The 230-530 in/lbs they are using are guidelines. What I normally see in the shop is
    425-485 in/lbs for normal numbers. If it drops way down in the lower 300's I will pull the gearbox and re-shim.

    Look in the Line Maint. manual. Section 05-50-00 page 5 describes the overload clutch check.

    Section 12-20-00 page 68 is for the gearbox friction torque check.

    Thanks Roger much appreciated - that explains it nicely, I was getting the two confused and the good news is the slipper clutch is within limits :)

    I think you have a typo Roger? didn't you meant "don't get the slipper clutch and friction torque mixed up? The slipper clutch and overload clutch are 2 terms for the same thing.
    The friction torque is the measurement of the gearbox spring pack pressure. should be between 22-44 foot pounds
    Overload clutch (sometimes called Slipper clutch) is to prevent damage to the crankshaft in case of a prop strike. Should be 440-480 fool pounds.

    I forgot to use the clutch between my brain and fingers and used poor verbiage.
    It's fixed.

    Hi

    I got a 912 with Overload clutch.I disassembled overload clutch but can't find proper tighten torque for reassembled it. anyone knows where it mentioned?!
