    This is my magnetic plug after removal for the firs time (180 hours). What should my next step be? Could it be normal for such extended period of time? Should I check it again next oil change or should I stop the plane?

    Carlos in my opinion that is to much metal on the metal detector. Have you cut open the oil filter to see if it also has metal? If not that needs to be done at each oil change. If the oil filter is clean than I would fly it another 10 hours and see if you still are making metal. If so, you need to find the source and correct it. I would still submit a defect report to Rotax now.

    Hi Carlos,


    A little more info will help. Did you change the oil after the first 25 hrs.? How often have you been changing oil? I would like to know what type of oil you are using? (synthetic or mineral oil based) I'll post a blog on oils later on.
    If this was after a regular 50 hr.-100 hr. oil change and you have been doing the proper oil changes then I would agree with Richard that is too much, butttt here is what I really think is going on depending on your answers above.


    The magnetic plug should be inspected at every oil change. This is part of your early warning system check if a problem is starting to show up. Rotax recommends a 25 hr. oil changes for 100LL use and a 100 hr. oil change for unleaded auto fuel. I will say many Rotax owners change oil even with auto fuel at 50 hr. intervals. This is the engine's life blood and it's longevity depends on having clean "non diseased" blood if you will pardon the analogy.

    Since this is the first time you checked the plug in the first 180 hrs. of operation this could be normal.The engine was breaking in plus this is a long interval accumulation. I would inspect the oil filter.
    Here is a great way to really see what's in a filter. Cut the oil filter open and take the paper element out like normal. Then take a jar about the size of a big pickle jar that you can place the filter element into. Pour an inch of fuel into the jar. Put the lid on and shake it for 10 seconds. Take the oil filter element out and inspect it. You shouldn't see anything as it will be absolutely clean. Then pour the jar contents over a white paper towel into another receptacle. The paper towel will act as a filter and the fuel will pour straight through. Any tiny little particle no matter what it is will be highly visible and left on the white paper towel. You can see if the particles are crushable carbon particles or pass a magnet over them to see if they are a ferrous or non ferrous metal and if they are a shinny metal. You can miss a lot of things by just opening a dirty oil covered oil element, but this way everything is visible no matter what it is.


    I would clean the plug, use a good semi or full synthetic oil and check the magnetic plug again in 50 hrs. I would bet it will be clean. I personally like 50 hr. oil changes, but you may opt to go up to the Rotax 100 hr. If you take proper care of your engine then you should get a long life out of it. I have some friends with 3000-4000 hrs of time on their 912's and only simple maintenance and no major work.

    I would highly recommend that you also take an oil sample. It is inexpensive and easy. When you take a sample always catch it at mid drain interval. Never catch it at the beginning of the oil drain or at the end. These kits usually cost around $18 and that includes the postage with a self addressed label.
